The purpose of a warning is to inform and prevent destruction. God spoke his warning through His Son and the stakes are high. Apart from Jesus Christ, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? The answer: We will not.

Having revealed Jesus as God’s greatest Word, surpassing symbols and prophets, Hebrews now lifts our eyes higher still: Christ is greater even than the angels. Mighty though they are, they bow before the Son—Jesus the Christ.

You walked an aisle, you were baptized, and you cleaned up some sinful habits—so you must be doing okay, right? The writer of Hebrews warns us that the Christian life does not allow for neutrality. If you are not actively pursuing Christ, then you risk a dangerous, and possibly unnoticed, drift away from Him.

A farewell often reveals the depth of a relationship. It usually holds two things: the hope of reunion, expressed through careful instruction, and the affirmation of shared affection— such as the words, “I love you.” As Paul concludes his epistle to the church in Rome, his letter carries both.
